Geography of Nevada

An inland state fed completely by rivers Nevada enjoys a western location on the map of America. Owing to its snow capped mountains Kansas gets its name. Replete with fertile undulating stretches of greenery,hills,mountains,rivers and creeks Geography of Nevada is indeed a colorful motley that unravels a fascinating experience.


Bordered by Utah,one of the most advanced economies of America in the eastern flank,Nevada has Arizona to its south and California to its western side. On the northern boundary of the state is Idaho. Mountain ranges constitute a major part of the Geographical feature of Nevada. Dissecting the state from north to south these mountain ranges have inland-draining valleys between them, rendering a typical look to the Great Basin. Almost all peaks of the ranges encircling the Nevada state are over 13,000 feet while The lush valleys stand at an altitude not more than 3,000 feet. The largest mountain range in Nevada is the Spring Mountains which occupies the west of Las Vegas. Nevada's lowest point is along the Colorado River, south of Laughlin.



Among the formidable rivers of Nevada are the Humboldt River which cuts across east to west , draining into the Humboldt Sink near Lovelock. There are other rivers like Walker, Truckee and Carson which drain from the Sierra Nevada towards the east. Being an inland state rivers play a pivotal role in the Geography of Nevada.

While the Great Basin Desert lies to the north of Nevada ,the southern third of the state constitutes the Mojave Desert. Rainfall varies between the different geographical features of Nevada. While the northern part receives occasional thunderstorms rainfall is not too adequate here. The eastern part is more blessed as far as precipitation is concerned. The mineral rich areas are not only important Geographical landmarks of Nevada but the rich mineral reserve have contributed much to the state's economy as well.
